5,000-Year-Old Exotic Animals Zoo Unearthed in Egypt… It’s the World’s First

The keeping of exotic pets by the wealthy has a long history. However, collecting animals together in what we today recognise as a zoo was thought by scholars to be a relatively recent phenomenon. This is why the remains of baboons, hippos, and other exotic pets buried more than 5,000 years ago in a graveyard near the Nile have long puzzled archaeologist. The animals were uncovered at Hierakonpolis, a town that flourished long before Egypt became a united kingdom ruled by pharaohs. New research on the finds suggests that these ancient animals were part of an ancient Egyptian zoo, probably the world’s first.
